Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a midwife and a doula?

A doula is a non-medical support person who focuses on preparing the birthing woman and support people with resources, referrals, and providing emotional and physical support for a more empowered and informed birth. While it is typical that midwives and doulas approach things very similarly, a midwife handles much more of the medical portion of pregnancy and delivery. Both providers will be with the birthing woman throughout pregnancy, delivery, and some of the postpartum period.

How will a birth doula work with my partner?

At the purposeful birth, one of my highest priorities is facilitating partner relationships in birth. I never want to step in the gap between partners but instead push you closer together for an unforgettable experience for everyone involved. This can often look like asking a partner to do particular movements, giving guidance for comfort words or placement, explaining the progression of labor and answering questions, and overall allowing partners to shine in the expectation of their child!

How do I find the best doula for me?

Interview, interview, interview! I always suggest potential clients make a list of what your ideal doula is and then start reaching out to local doulas to see if they are a fit. Whether it be religious perspective, personality needs, or cultural understanding; there is a doula for everyone! I am passionate about my work and if I am not the doula for you, let me help you find that perfect person. Let's chat!

What is a birth doula?

A birth doula is a trained professional that provides both expert guidance and continuous physical, emotion, and informational support for the duration of pregnancy, labor, birth, and the immediate postpartum period.

Do I have to have a home birth to have a doula?

No! Research shows, doulas can improve outcomes for any type of labor and delivery including cesarean, medicated or unmedicated hospital, birth center, or home birth.

What does it look like to have a birth doula at my birth?

Doulas will often carry out a variety of comfort and progressive measures such as hip squeezes, movements, bodily placements, massage, affirmations, and verbal reassurances for both mom and partner. Doulas can also be seen refilling waters, providing snacks, communicating with loved ones, taking photos, and creating an overall comfortable and safe birth space.
